No. 2 in the Various Moulds Series sees 4 tracks of contemporary techno: Cement returns slipping into the echoey depths of dub techno on the A side. It kicks off with a banger from Montreal veteran Mateo Murphy, his first deep techno track for over a decade. Black River is as the name eludes; a deep dubby and dark flowing track that builds through a droney crescendo. It's got epic big room peak hour written all over it with its tough attitude, full on sound and tantilising dub atmosphere. The second A cut is by Sonitus Eco previously found on Silent Season, his label HAAV and most recently on the crucial Verdant. He delivers a coup de grace of dub techno. Confidently stripped back and built around a simple but effective 808 pattern, his tenacity with pads and atmospheric space echo and reverbs gives Ruffcut its character and leaves you wanting more. On the flip side, the elusive CMNT returns for another monophonic, arpeggio laden journey. With a constant thumping kick and crisp open hat pattern, there's a hint of the bells in the distance while occasional juno stabs, melodic notes and some random evidence of human voices give texture to the constant rhythm of White Heat. Then to wrap it up Fourmatic, label founder Caspian Rabone’s electro moniker, hot off the back of the successful and rare CMNT1.5 clear vinyl, drops a spacey electro workout - Ectosketch. Playing with tonal rhythms at the beginning, the track unveils awkward synth hooks and anxious metallic strings to keep things edgy. This 12" has plenty to offer any DJ with a penchant for deep and dubby textures found on labels like Echocord or Metrolux, with the extra little electro kicker.
